The Houston Wild is proud to announce that the 2023-24 season will mark the 35th anniversary of the Houston Junior Aeros Hockey Association, Inc. which has been doing business as the Houston Wild Hockey Club for many seasons.
Founded in 1988 as a registered 501(c)(3) organization, the original Metropolitan Houston Hockey Association, Inc., changed its name in 1992 to Houston Junior Hockey Association, Inc. and again to the Houston Junior Aeros Hockey Association, Inc. in 1995 in a partnership, of sorts, with the Houston Aeros which operated in Houston as an independent professional minor league IHL team from 1994 to 2001.
Upon the Houston Aeros joining the AHL in 2001, the Junior Aeros rebranded only its Tier II/AA teams (12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U age divisions) commencing the 2002-03 season as the Houston Wild Hockey Club in recognition of the Houston Aeros’ NHL affiliate, the Minnesota Wild.
The balance of the Association teams, at that time, continued to don the Junior Aeros’ name and colors until 2008-09 when, for administrative, practical, and logistical reasons, the Association dispensed with dual logos and dual-colored jerseys in favor of the Houston Wild exclusively.
Fast forward to 2023…in celebration of 35 years of Houston youth hockey history and tradition, the Association is excited to confirm its plans to revive the Douglas B-23 Dragon bomber logo and white/navy colors of the Junior Aeros. Commencing next season, all Association teams will be the Houston Junior Aeros.
No matter the name, logo, or colors, the Association has been recognized for decades as one of the top volunteer-led Texas youth hockey organizations and takes pride in:
-
its legacy of commitment to the development and success of its players
-
the knowledge, dedication, and experience of its coaches
-
the administrative strength of its Board of Directors and support staff
-
its role as a Charter Member of the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League (formed in 2012)
-
its partnership with USA Hockey, the governing affiliate, the Texas Amateur Hockey Association, and the Houston hockey community and rinks.
Of most importance, the Association wishes to recognize and thank the countless volunteers over those 35 years whose contributions and efforts have been so invaluable in building -- and continuing to build onto -- this Houston youth hockey tradition.
Once the 2022-23 season is complete, the Association looks forward to providing more information related to the logistics of the migration back to the Houston Junior Aeros to facilitate a smooth transition back to the roots of this great Association.
In the meantime, we welcome and encourage all Houston Junior Aeros alumni players to submit memorable photos. Please see BELOW for photo submission details!
